Looking for a specific model or brand?
Not unimportant when choosing a gaming headset are the platforms on which you want to use the device. Do you play on a console or on PC? Do you play on Xbox / Playstation 4 or do you have to work with all the latest platforms?
Within headsets, there are a number of different types: the earbuds (or ear), the open headset and the closed headsets. Read more about the differences between the various models in our tips and facts below!

The size of the drivers in the headset is indicated by the diameter: 40 mm or 50 mm are the most used sizes for headsets. Read more about the differences in our tips and facts below!
You often have a headset on your head for hours. Prolonged use of a heavy headset can cause fatigue. So pay attention to the weight of a headset. Tip: put the headset on your head before you purchase.
Headset with noise canceling creates a form of anti-noise to obscure the real noise. They work best in noisy environments such as during a bus or train ride in the morning but also when you have a noisy family in the living room.
Do you want to be free of wires? Do you not mind losing sounds quality or possibly picking up interference? Then a Bluetooth headset is recommended for you. An important factor in your choice is the battery life.
Here you can read whether you headset supports mono, stereo or even virtual surround sound. To obtain surround sound, you need different individual speakers. Some headsets mimic this effect (Virtual Surround Sound) through software techniques.
Headset with USB has an integrated sound card and interpret the incoming signal independently of the sound processor in your PC / console. The integrated sound card also provides the “Virtual Surround Sound” effect in some cases. If you have a PC with a bad sound card, a USB headset can give better quality.
Depending on the resistance (expressed in Ohm) the headset needs a stronger or weaker signal to achieve the same volume. If you need headphones for a television amplifier, then you should choose a headset with a high resistance. If you are looking for a headset for console or mobile device such as your smartphone or tablet, then you should choose a headset with a resistance of 32 ohms or less.
The sensitivity of sound devices is indicated by dB or decibel. This is value is the maximum volume that the headset can produce. As a contrast, we have three examples:
- 60 dB = an ordinary conversation
- 110 dB = shouting in your ear or electric saw
- 120 dB = live rock concert or chainsaw
The measuring of sound volume is done on the basis of decibels. Decibels are a unique value because the decibel scale is a logarithmic scale which means that the sound volume exponentially increases with every decibel.
Everything above 90 dB is able to damage the human hearing during a long exposure. An increase of 3 dB corresponds to doubling the volume. The difference between 90 dB and 110 dB is therefore considerable.

More Tips and Facts!
In the technical fact sheet we talked briefly about the different options within the headset but the type often determines the comfort and quality of the sound. A brief explanation of the differences within all types makes it clear which headset suits you.
There is a number of a different type:
Earbuds (or ears)
The main advantage that they are portable and comfortable for anyone wearing glasses or big ears. The sound often has to suffer from the small drivers. There are those who integrate multiple drivers into that small earbud but they are often much more expensive because of their complexity.
Open Headsets (on-ear)
They cover the ear but do not form a closed environment around the ear. The advantages of these models are: in many cases, they offer the most comfort, they are portable enough to also use on-the-go and they do not completely shut the user off from the outside world.
Closed Headset (over-ear)
These cover the entire ear cups. The disadvantages: they are large, not very portable and provide warm ears. The advantages: they guarantee the best sound quality thanks to the size of the drivers, better sound insulation because they cover the entire earcup and the ear cushions often provide extra comfort.
Try Before You Buy
Some qualities of a headset cannot always be read from the technical specifications (comfort, closing off the ear cups, how does he feel with glasses, …) and experiences yourself firsthand. Not all properties are equally important for every customer.
